The Players' Ring presents Late Night Summer Series
An Evening of Grand Guignol: Theatre of Terror
Directed by John Herman
Starting in 1897, a deconsecrated church in Paris held a lurid attraction, the Théâtre du Grand Guignol. A constant target for moral censorship and the last bastion of artistic liberty against fascist rule, an evening of Grand Guignol presented a variety show of the macabre, as the blackest of black comedies rotated with violent melodramas, grisly thrillers, and burlesque farces. The Grand Guignol was the Moulin Rouge of fear and eroticism, a significant precursor to realist theatre and the cradle of modern horror. An Evening of Grand Guignol: Theatre of Terror is an evening you will not soon forget.
